Office of County Attorney
The County Attorney is appointed by the Washington County Board of Supervisors. The County Attorney is responsible for civil matters involving the County government. Civil duties include advising and representing the Board of Supervisors and many of the boards, departments, agencies, officials, and employees of the County in matters related to official County business; drafting or preparing County ordinances; and defending or bringing actions in which the County or its boards, departments, agencies, officials, or employees is a party.
The County Attorney also may prosecute violations of County ordinances, as authorized by the governing body and with the concurrence of the Commonwealth’s Attorney. Note: The Office of County Attorney is unable to assist citizens with legal questions or respond to requests for legal advice or the application of law to specific facts when such inquiries relate to matters of private concern rather than official County business. In regard to matters of a private nature, you may wish to consult with a private attorney.
